History of Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital

Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital (MKRH) is a Level 6 referral and teaching hospital located in Othaya Sub-county, Nyeri County, adjacent to Othaya Level 4 Hospital. It serves as a critical healthcare hub for counties including Nyeri, Embu, Laikipia, Meru, Kirinyaga, and others across the region. Officially opened by the Ministry of Health on 4th August 2019 and handed over to Kenyatta National Hospital on 30th October 2019, MKRH was later rebranded and gazetted under its current name. It now delivers highly specialized healthcare services and supports training, research, and innovation. MKRH offers care in key disciplines such as maternity, pediatrics, internal medicine, and surgery, and is equipped with essential units including Emergency, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Specialty Outpatient Clinics. The hospital has expanded into specialized areas like Oncology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, and ENT, and regularly engages in community outreach with local health facilities.
